11 September 2010.

On 11 September 2010, activists from Rock Around the Blockade (RATB) held lively protests in London, Manchester and Newcastle-upon-Tyne to demand freedom for the Cuban 5 as part of the international day of action planned by the National Committee To Free The Five to mark the 12th Anniversary of their imprisonment.

In Newcastle in the north of England, activists collected petitions against the illegal imprisonment of the 5 Cuban heroes and asked passers by to sign cards of solidarity which will be sent to Gerardo, Antonio, Fernando, Rene and Ramon individually

In Manchester, despite heavy rain, activists handed out hundreds of leaflets explaining the Five's case and struggle for freedom, during a colourful stall, with flags and revolutionary Cuban hip-hop blasting out onto the streets.

In Trafalgar Square, central London, RATB members worked with representatives from Hands Off Venezuela, The Free Mumia Abu Jamal Campaign (Free Mumia), George Jackson Socialist League and the Revolutionary Communist Group (RCG). They held a lively protest with constant speeches and statements, highlighting the hypocrisy of US double standards in its “War on Terrorism” and the countless victims and political prisoners of imperialism worldwide.

A Speaker from the RCG highlighted the long history of US and European imperialism in intervening in Cuban and Latin American affairs and directly sponsoring terrorist acts against Cuba, whilst simultaneously harbouring right-wing terror masterminds such as Luis Posada Carriles and Orlando Bosch proven to have planned the bombing of Cubana Flight 455 in 1976 resulting in the deaths of all 73 people on board. A speaker from the Free Mumia campaign reminded the public about the similar case of Mumia Abu Jamal, a political prisoner on death row convicted for a crime he did not commit because he provided a political voice and movement for poor African Americans in the United States, in solidarity with the oppressed of this world. Mumia has been a lifelong friend of the Cuban Revolution and to this day pledges his support for the struggle of the Cuban 5 for justice.

A speaker from RATB spoke about the difficulty for Cubans workers of living under a genocidal blockade implemented by the strongest trading power, and the right for Cuban patriots to attempt to prevent acts of US-sponsored terrorism and any oppressed person to rise in their own self-defence. Hundreds of passers-by in each city took leaflets on the Cuban 5 and their struggle for justice, which has been censored by the majority of capitalist media globally. Supporters of the Cuba 5 helped to obtain signatures for petitions to free the Five, from members of the public and re-address the slanders spread by the imperialist nations about the socialist island.

The case of the Cuban 5 and the gains of the Cuban Revolution have been censored and slandered by the majority of capitalist television and radio networks globally. Therefore, it is vitally important that activists inside Imperialist Britain actively expose the false imprisonment of the Cuban 5 and build awareness of the gains of the Cuban Revolution which demonstrates a better world is possible.

Rock Around the Blockade is a socialist organisation in solidarity with Cuba and Revolutionary movements throughout Latin America. It was founded in Britain in 1995 by members and supporters of the Revolutionary Communist Group (RCG) and demands an end to the US blockade, the release of the Cuban 5, is against the imperialist occupation at Guantanamo Bay and calls for a boycott of Bacardi, supporter of the Miami Mafia. Since 1995 we have sent 11 solidarity brigades to Cuba, providing material aid to Cuban youth.

Today RATB flew the Cuban and Palestinian flags proudly next to each other, representing the solidarity of revolutionary Cuba with the oppressed nations of the world. At the end of the demonstration the protestors demonstrated together with Big Ben and Nelson’s column in the background with cries of “Free The Cuban 5!” and “Viva Fidel and Raul!”.
